Drawing on UCSF’s proud history of serving San Francisco for more than a century, the future hospital at UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital (HDH) at Parnassus Heights will increase UCSF’s capacity to provide world-class patient care to those who seek it. Inspired by The Healing Habitat, the new hospital will include more than 300 inpatient beds, diagnostic and treatment facilities, graduate schools in heath sciences, as well as public areas that cater to both inpatients and outpatients in a holistic approach.
The project is designed to address the social, psychological, spiritual and behavioral components of health. Integrating seamlessly into its surroundings, the new hospital brings nature, human-centered design and innovative medical care into one environment.

The new hospital will be architecturally remarkable, built to be energy-efficient, seismically sound and environmentally sustainable. To bring this vision to life, UCSF has selected internationally recognized designer Herzog & deMeuron and global leader in healthcare design HDR.
Advanced integrated technologies that create opportunities for personalized services—wayfinding, entertainment, information—and allow patients to take control of their own health and wellness.
Panoramic views, sunlight, and natural surroundings, and a supportive workplace with optimal resources for clinicians and staff in surroundings that promote their physical and emotional health.
A holistic healing experience that begins before check-in and extends throughout the stay, discharge sequence, and continued recovery. It will be a place that transforms patients, their families, and support systems into active participants in their healing process.
Rooms designed for privacy and infection control, and calming communal spaces that foster stronger, supportive relationships between providers, patients, and families.
The new hospital at Parnassus Heights is designed to serve the needs of patients from the Bay Area and beyond. With a target completion of 2030, the additional space will allow UCSF to serve more patients, with final distribution of beds still in planning.
